DIAMOND EDUCATION · THE FOUR C'S

Understanding Diamond Clarity

Diamond clarity measures the presence of natural internal characteristics called inclusions, and external surface blemishes. Purity is a spectrum shaped by high-pressure forces deep within the Earth.

Explained

What is Diamond Clarity?

Clarity is categorized based on five parameters: the size, number, position, nature, and color of the inclusions. While many diamond characteristics require magnification to be identified, the correct combination ensures that your jewel remains absolutely brilliant to the naked eye.

Expert Advice

Selecting the Ideal Clarity

Higher clarity grades are rarer, but beyond a certain point the difference is invisible to the naked eye. These tips will help you balance clarity against size, shape and budget.

  1. 01

    Invisible to the Naked Eye

When reaching grades in excess of VVS2, inclusions are so small they are actually invisible to the naked eye. If your main concern is visible inclusions, going beyond this grade is unnecessary.

  2. 02

    Consider Stone Size

The size of your stone will make a difference to how visible inclusions are overall. When setting smaller stones such as those on diamond wedding rings, grades typically start at VS and go no higher than VVS. All stones we sell over 0.7ct are VS2 or above.

  4. 04

    Mind the Position

Inclusions under the table (centre) are far more visible than those near the girdle (edge). A diamond with a few small inclusions towards its edge can look cleaner than one with a single inclusion at its centre.
